Hi! I'm Mauren, the human behind Cat Lady Tails 🐾

Growing up in a household without cats due to allergic parents, I had always considered myself exclusively a dog-person. And my Lhasa Apso, named Shelby, has been my ride-or-die since day one.

Once I graduated college, I moved into a shared home with my roommate, my dog, and her cat--the first time I had ever lived with a cat full-time! Turns out, cats are pretty cool. Fresh out of school, however, I wasn't necessarily looking for another pet because I was just excited to be reunited with my girl Shelby.

A couple months later, fall of 2013, I got a random text from said roommate asking if I wanted a kitten with a weird jaw. Having never personally owned a cat, let alone a cat with potential special needs, I told her--tentatively--yes, pending meeting this tiny creature.

As you can probably guess, it didn't take me long to fall in love with this wonky tortoiseshell cat that I promptly named Gremlin, after the adorable soot gremlins from Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro.

It wasn't until several years later, when my sixteen-year-old dog Shelby began to deteriorate in health, that I decided to adopt another cat. Heading to the Pulaski County Humane Society during one of their clear the shelter events, I had no idea what type of kitten I was looking for... Until I met Calcifer the orange boi, named after the fire demon from yet another Studio Ghibli film, Howl's Moving Castle. His sweet personality and the spunky sparkle in his eye totally stole my heart.

Shelby passed a few months later, and a few more months flew by when I found myself in the middle of a global pandemic, working from home with two sassy, bickering kitties--an older tortie girl who simply wanted to nap, and a young orange boy who just wanted to play. After watching Calcifer basically terrorize Gremlin for several months, I figured a new playmate was needed.

Browsing the website of the Little Rock Animal Village, I stumbled upon a tiny, fluffy kitten that I couldn't look away from. I put in an application immediately, and over the weekend was told that she was mine. I named her Jiji after the cat from Kiki's Delivery Service, another incredible Studio Ghibli production.

Three cats was supposed to be it, I promise. I had no intention of acquiring more. Which is why, in November of 2020, when I found a pair of kittens on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere, I had every intention of taking them straight to the Humane Society so they could find loving forever homes.

...but it didn't take five minutes for me to fall in love with the tiny brother-sister pair--one tortie girl and one orange boy--a literal copy and paste of my existing cats. And thus David Rose & Alexis Rose (of Schitt's Creek) came home with me, rounding out my cat collection to a total of 5. For now.

I have been sharing Gremlin's cute little blep on Instagram since 2014, but it wasn't until I started sharing her and her siblings on TikTok (in 2020!) that she finally started receiving the attention she deserves for being such a sweet and adorable angel.

This website is the official home for all things Gremlin the Blep, Calcifer, Jiji, David, Alexis, and Cat Lady Tails.

Thanks for being here. ❤️
