Do you currently own a Litter Robot, and might be thinking of getting a new one, but aren’t sure exactly which model you have? Let’s go through every iteration of the Litter Robot automatic litter box that has been released since its inception to determine exactly which Litter Robot model you currently own, and whether or not it might be time to upgrade.
Litter Robot 1/Litter Robot Classic/The Original Litter Robot

Launched in the year 2000 under the company then-called Automated Pet Care Products, Inc., the Litter Robot was born! Originally sold direct to consumers through the AutoPets website, the original Litter Robot model wasn’t a breakout success, but the product did gain a quiet following as cat owners became enticed by the idea of never scooping again. As this model is now 26 years old as of this blog’s posting, it is very unlikely you have this model. But if you do, we want to hear from you (and see it!)
Litter Robot 2

Five years later, in 2005, the Litter Robot 2 was released with several upgrades over the Litter Robot Classic. With an improved design and performance based on injection mold tooling, Litter Robot 2 served as the flagship product at AutoPets until 2015, when the next version of Litter Robot would be released. Any current Litter Robot 2 models out in the world would now be anywhere between 11 and 21 years old. I would be genuinely impressed if you have this model. However, if you’re still rocking a Litter Robot 2, please let us know so we can marvel in its endurance!
Litter Robot 3/Litter Robot 3 Open Air

Released in 2015, the Litter Robot 3 really innovated upon the first two models, modernizing the design and adding even more new features. The much larger opening and litter tray not only meant that bigger cats could use the Litter Robot 3 more easily, but that the automatic litter box can hold more waste at one time. This model does not have wi-fi capabilities, and does not have the wi-fi logo on the base above the action buttons. Whisker (formerly AutoPets) began to slowly phase out the Litter Robot 3 models in 2022 with the release of the Litter Robot 4, and fully discontinued production of all Litter Robot 3s in 2026 with the release of the Litter Robot Evo, Litter Robot 5, and Litter Robot 5 Pro. It is possible you have this model, just look for the wi-fi symbol on the font, and if it’s not there, you have a Litter Robot 3 Open Air.
Litter Robot 3 Connect

Just two years after the Litter Robot 3 was released, 2017 saw the launch of the Litter Robot 3 Connect. Physically the two Litter Robot 3 models are nearly identical, with the primary (and obvious) difference being that the Litter Robot 3 Connect can connect to wi-fi. Why would you want your automatic litter box to connect to wi-fi? This allowed the Litter Robot 3 Connect to communicate with the Whisker app, telling you when the litter tray is full, when a cat uses the robot, and more. The Litter Robot 3 Connect had a small wi-fi symbol right above the buttons on the front of the base of the machine—if you see this symbol, you own a Litter Robot 3 Connect model.
Litter Robot 4

It wasn’t until 2022 that we finally saw the release of the Litter Robot 4. Taking what we knew and loved about the previous Litter Robot 3 models, Whisker greatly improved several features in the Litter Robot 4. Things like a much larger opening, a bigger waste drawer, and an incredibly silent motor swiftly drove the Litter Robot 4 to the top of the lineup. This model is so great, they still currently offer it. It has a unique design out of any of the Litter Robot models, so it’s pretty easy to know whether your model is the Litter Robot 4 or not. Litter Robot Evo

Released in late 2025, the Litter Robot Evo is the most compact Litter Robot ever made! It’s designed for 1-2 cats and perfect for smaller spaces, but not necessarily larger cats (max weight 19 pounds.) At 27.6” tall, the Litter Robot Evo replaced the Litter Robot 3 as the entry-level Litter Robot model, and is considered to be the most “basic” of the current lineup. However, it is still a great option if you’re looking for a cut-and-dry automatic litter box. Want to save $50 on a Litter Robot Evo? Litter Robot 5

The Litter Robot 5 was also released in late 2025 and is the current flagship model of the entire Litter Robot lineup, for good reason. While it is undeniably the largest Litter Robot model at 29.9” tall, the Litter Robot 5 is also a freaking workhorse of an automatic litter box. The Litter Robot 5 can handle 5 cats (up to 30 pounds!) and has the largest waste drawer of any Litter Robot model ever. This model, however, does not have the integrated dual camera system of the Litter Robot 5 Pro and, therefore, does not have a camera on the front of the base. Litter Robot 5 Pro

The final model released in late 2025, the Litter Robot 5 Pro is truly the best of the best when it comes to the automatic litter box market. Again, while physically almost identical to the Litter Robot 5, the Litter Robot 5 Pro has the integrated dual camera system which means there is a camera on the front of the robot, and on the inside. This allows you to see exactly which cat is using the Litter Robot when, eliminating confusion when you have multiple cats, especially ones with similar weights. The Litter Robot 5 Pro is also the only model in the current lineup that works with Whisker’s new PetTag product, a lightweight RFID tag that can be attached to your cat’s collar for even more extensive tracking. As of right now the current models available on Whisker’s website are the Litter Robot Evo, the Litter Robot 4, the Litter Robot 5, and the Litter Robot 5 Pro. If you’ve purchased your Litter Robot model prior to 2022, it is almost certainly some version of the Litter Robot 3, either Open Air or Connect. The flagship model from 2022-2025, the Litter Robot 4 was incredibly popular but significantly physically different than its predecessor. And the Litter Robot Evo, Litter Robot 5, and Litter Robot 5 Pro were all released in late 2025, so if you ordered after this date, it’s possible you could have one of these models, purely dependent on size, functionality, and appearance.
Litter Robot by Whisker is the only brand of automatic litter box I will ever recommend, purely from a safety standpoint. This is the ORIGINAL automatic litter box company and they have always prioritized cat safety.
