So you’re thinking about buying a Litter Robot, and know that you’re TIRED of scooping litter boxes, but don’t know which Litter Robot model to order? That’s what I’m here for!

Why listen to what I have to say? Who the heck are you?

Me and one of my six cats, Calcifer.

Not only am I a cat-mom of 6, I’ve been a paying customer with Whisker since 2020, when I purchased my first Litter Robot 3 Connect. Now, in 2026, I have six different Litter Robot models: a Litter Robot 3, a Litter Robot 3 Connect, three Litter Robot 4s, and a Litter Robot 5 Pro. I am also now an affiliate with the company, but firmly believe this automatic litter box is the best on the market, so I make this content willingly!

Why choose Whisker? It seems a little pricey.

Before I invested in my first Litter Robot, I did months of research on the available models out there. Whisker (the parent company of Litter Robot) is the originator of the automatic litter box. They have always prioritized cat health and safety, and continue to do so. Third-party or knock-off Litter Robots have unfortunately hurt and, in some cases, killed cats. This is why Litter Robot by Whisker is the ONLY automatic litter box I will recommend and endorse. They truly care about cats, and this product is the safest on the market.

Whisker no longer makes the Litter Robot 3 models, so the current Litter Robot lineup includes the Litter Robot Evo, Litter Robot 4, Litter Robot 5, and Litter Robot 5 Pro.

All Litter Robots essentially function the same way: a cat goes in and uses the litter box, the Litter Robot will begin to spin after a pre-determined amount of minutes, the waste deposits into the tray below, and you empty the tray when it is full. You can use any type of clumping litter in Litter Robots. Each Litter Robot model is wifi-capable and can connect to your phone through the Whisker app (available on iOS and Android.) All of Whisker’s Litter Robots come with a one-year warranty out of the box with the option to purchase an extended warranty for an additional two years. And when it comes to cat-sensing, each of the Litter Robot models have a built-in weight scale that can help you identify which cat is using the Litter Robot, when.

But what’s the difference between the Litter Robot models? We’ll look at each version one at a time to figure out which Litter Robot is right for you.

The newest entry-level Litter Robot, the Litter Robot Evo is the most compact automatic litter box of the current lineup. The Litter Robot Evo is designed for 1-2 cats, weighing between 3 and 19 pounds. It can be used on either hard floor or carpet. Dimension-wise, the Litter Robot Evo is 27.6” tall, with a 20.6” x 24.3” footprint. Inside there is 14.5” of headroom and the Litter Robot Evo itself weighs 21.5 pounds. The Litter Robot Evo does not include sensors that will tell you litter level and waste level, apart from it being full. This model is basic, and ideal for households with two cats maximum. Anymore than 2 and I would recommend ordering a second model, or stepping up to the Litter Robot 4.

Released in 2022, the Litter Robot 4 is honestly awesome and I understand why they kept it in the current lineup. Designed for up to 4 cats weighing between 3 and 25 pounds, the Litter Robot 4 is a decent step-up from the Litter Robot Evo. The Litter Robot 4 is 29.5” tall, with 16.5” of headroom inside the globe, has a 22” by 27” footprint, and weighs 24 pounds on its own. With a much larger litter tray, the Litter Robot 4 holds more significantly more waste than the Litter Robot Evo. The Litter Robot 4 works perfectly on hard floors, but does require a carpet tray (hard surface) to work on carpeted floors. Unlike the Litter Robot Evo, the Litter Robot 4 has sensors that will tell you the current litter level in the Litter Robot, as well as the level in the waste drawer. As an added bonus, the Litter Robot 4 is also compatible with the Litter Hopper—an accessory that will add litter to your Litter Robot when it senses that the litter in the globe is too low. Although the Litter Robot 4 is truly good for up to 4 cats, I would still recommend two Litter Robots for any households with 3+ cats. I make this recommendation because you never want to have to make a kitty wait to use the bathroom. I bought my second Litter Robot shortly after my first and never regretted it.

The Litter Robot 5 models are truly the best of the best when it comes to automatic litter boxes. The Litter Robot 5 is designed for up to 5 cats, weighing between 3 and 30 pounds. This model is 29.9” tall, with a 17.5” headroom inside the globe, a footprint of 22” by 27”, and weighs 28.7 pounds. Like the Litter Robot 4, the Litter Robot 5 also has sensors that will tell you litter and waste level through the Whisker app. But unlike the Litter Robot 4, the Litter Robot 5 has an LCD color screen, and can be used on hard floors or carpet without issue. Featuring the largest waste drawer of the entire Litter Robot lineup, the Litter Robot 5 will give you the most amount of time between waste drawer-changes. Litter Robot 5 also has a brand new feature called WasteID, an industry-first feature that will tell you whether your cat has urinated or defecated. And although there is currently no Litter Hopper available for the Litter Robot 5, Whisker has said it is “coming soon” on their website.

So, what does the Litter Robot 5 Pro do, that the Litter Robot 5 cannot do? For the most part, physically, the Litter Robot 5 Pro is almost identical to the Litter Robot 5. It has the same dimensions when it comes to height, headroom, and footprint, although the Litter Robot 5 Pro is a bit heavier at 29.6 pounds. And the Litter Robot 5 Pro is also good for up to 5 cats, weighing between 3 and 30 pounds. The primary difference between the Litter Robot 5 and the Litter Robot 5 Pro is the integrated dual camera system. The Litter Robot 5 Pro has a camera on the front of the automatic litter box as well as a litter bed camera. These cameras allow you to see exactly which cat is going in, removing any confusion in traffic, especially if you have cats with similar weights. The Litter Robot 5 Pro is also the only Litter Robot model that is compatible with their new PetTag, a lightweight tag that identifies your cat using RFID technology. When it comes to top of the line automatic litter boxes, the Litter Robot 5 Pro takes the cake.

In conclusion...

Every single Whisker Litter Robot is a good option, but the model you should choose essentially depends on two factors: number of cats and how often you want to empty the tray. I think the Litter Robot Evo is great for a 1-2 cat household, but you will be emptying the tray a bit more frequently. The Litter Robot 4 is great for up to 4 cats, and can hold significantly more waste than the Litter Robot Evo. I think it's worth the extra $100 for the larger waste drawer alone. And the Litter Robot 5 and Litter Robot 5 Pro, good for up to 5 cats, have the largest waste drawers of the entire lineup and can (of course) hold the most waste, and therefore will not have to be emptied quite as frequently. Now most people also might not like me for saying this, but I think households with 2 or more cats really need at LEAST 2 Litter Robot models. It doesn’t necessarily matter which models, but you never want any cat to feel like they have to wait to go to the bathroom. Having multiple Litter Robots ensures your cats can always use the litter box whenever they need to.
